More than 5,000 opposition activists took the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day to protest against the arrest of opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who has been in jail since August 5th on charges of contempt of court.
She was detained during procedures related to her trial for abuse of office when signing a gas deal with Russia in 2009. The opposition claims that Tymoshenko’s prosecution is political and aims at keeping her from running in future elections.
