India presents contradictory trends on governance, which is not surprising given that it is a country the size of a continent. Once credited with the best judicial independence in its income group, it has regressed during most of the past decade, with a slight recovery since 2015. During this time, freedom of the press has remained reasonably high. Moreover, administrative simplification, transparency, and e-government, have progressed significantly — needing to be fully implemented in order to maximize their potential. While demand for good governance is uneven and limited by low human development index and limited Internet access in some regions, it is also growing steadily.
